56th FRCS Higher Surgery Course

Welcome to the Whipps Cross Higher Surgery Course Website.

​​

Higher Surgical Course in general surgery before final FRCS exit exams (intercollegiate exams). The course is for 7 full days and occurs twice yearly prior to the February and May examination dates. The course has both clinical, practical and viva sessions, along with interactive lectures and symposiums.

​

Designed specifically to prepare candidates for the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in General Surgery, this intensive seven day course offers:

  • Clinical Sessions

  • Practice vivas in general and sub-specialty surgery, critical care and academic surgery

  • Tutorials on sub-speciality topics

  • Authoritative state of the art lectures

  • Symposia

 

NOTE: The Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in General Surgery consists of two parts. The first part comprises a two-hour multiple-choice paper and a further two-hour paper using extended matching questions. The second part is a clinical and oral examination. Candidates are not allowed to take the clinical and oral examination (part 2) unless they have passed part 1.

The Higher Surgery Course does not at present offer teaching directed specifically towards the MCQ and EMQ papers though the course content will be relevant to them. Candidates may choose to attend the course either before sitting Part 1 or before sitting Part 2 as they prefer.

​

Observers can attend all sessions but will not be examined in the practice clinicals and vivas.

​

Learning Objectives – final revision course just before sitting the exit exam to polish and improve your exam skills.

​

Course Dates: 5 - 11 January 2026

 

​Course Timing: Typically the course takes place between 08.00 - 20.00hrs each day. 

 

Course Fees:

  • Full Participant: £1300

  • Observers: £900​​​

This course is scheduled to be a virtual (online) course. However, if this changes you will be advised via email.
